Charles Leads Liberty Past Connecticut

The Liberty earned a hard-fought victory over the Connecticut Sun, 89-82, on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

It was another big night for Tina Charles, who led the Liberty with a double-double, 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Sugar Rodgers had 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Epiphanny Prince had 13 points off the bench on 3-5 from the field, and all baskets from behind the arc. Amanda Zahui B had 10 points and four rebounds.

The Liberty improved to 21-10, and are 4 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the Eastern Conference.

After receiving more than 2,000 fan submissions during their “Name the Team” Contest, the Staten Island Yankees have narrowed the new name of the franchise down to five finalists.

Solomon Wilcots on The Upcoming NFL Season

Solomon Wilcots has calling games for the NFL on CBS since 2001 and he will be working this season with Spero Dedes.

I caught up with Wilcots recently and we talked about the Giants, Tom Coughlin, the Patriots, and the Colin Kaepernick controversy.

Jason Schott: What themes do you see in the NFL this season?

Solomon Wilcots: In the AFC, we’ve been used to watching Denver, we’ve been used to watching New England, this Tom Brady/Peyton Manning sort of rivalry, and it’s no more. We need to step back and take that in, that this is the first time in almost 20 years we’ve played a season without Peyton Manning. I know he was out in 2011, but really with no rivalry. So with that being said, the AFC is going to shift a little bit.

Lampard Named MLS Player of the Week

New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 26th week of the 2016 MLS season.

Lampard was named MLS Player of the Month for July, a month in which he scored six goals and added one assist

Since making his debut on June 18, Lampard has been on a tear, now ranking in the top 10 in goals in the MLS after scoring all 11 of his tallies in the previous 13 matches.

Granderson Mets’ Nominee For Clemente Award

On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced that Curtis Granderson was named the New York Mets 2016 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, the most prominent individual player award bestowed by MLB.

Granderson will be recognized on the field prior to the Mets’ home game on Tuesday, September 20

The Roberto Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Each Club nominates one current player to be considered for the Roberto Clemente Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

Wednesday, September 7 marks the fifteenth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially acknowledge local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award.

Tina Charles Gets Gold Medal, Leads Liberty Rout of Mercury

Tina Charles received her Olympic gold medal, and her 23 points led the New York Liberty to a 92-70 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

In addition to her 23 points on 9-for-23 from the field, including a three-pointer, Charles also had 15 rebounds.

Sugar Rodgers and Brittany Boyd had 19 points each, with Boyd shooting a sterling 7-for-8 from the field. Carolyn Swords had eight points and seven rebounds.

Afropunk Brooklyn: Where Everyone’s A Star

One of the landmark cultural events of the summer, AfroPunk Brooklyn, took place at Commodore Barry Park on August 27 and 28.

The annual festival brought acts like Ice Cube, Janelle Monae, Fishbone, Living Color, and Young Fathers, to the stage, with some of the most creative people in Brooklyn looking on.

The appeal of AfroPunk is that the people in the crowd are the stars that turned it into a global phenomenon.
