Ponds Named To NABC All-District Second Team

The accolades keep pouring in for St. John’s sophomore guard Shamorie Ponds.

Last week, he was named to the All-Big East First Team and USBWA All-District Team honors.

Ponds has now been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-District Second Team for the second-straight season.

A 6-foot-1 guard from Brooklyn, Ponds led the Big East in scoring (21.6 ppg) and steals (2.3 spg) during the regular season while also finishing top-5 in the conference in assists (4.7 apg).

Photo Essay: ACC Tournament At Barclays Center

The ACC Tournament was held last week at Barclays Center, with Virginia beating North Carolina on Saturday night to cap off an incredible tournament.

Virginia, the number one seed in the ACC Tournament, finished the regular season as the top team in the nation, and they will enter the NCAA Tournament as the top overall seed, expected to break through and win a national championship.

Edgardo Alfonzo Back As Cyclones Manager

Edgardo Alfonzo will return as Brooklyn Cyclones manager for the 2018 season, his fifth year with the Cyclones organization and second as manager.

The Mets legend, known as “Fonzie,” will be joined on the bench by pitching coach Royce Ring, also returning for his second season in that role, and newcomer Marlon Anderson (hitting coach). An additional coach will be added to the staff in the coming weeks.

The Cyclones will open their 2018 season with on Friday, June 15th at the Staten Island Yankees, with the home opener against Staten Island the following night.

ACC Sends Nine Teams To NCAA Tournament

The Atlantic Coast Conference, who just had their tournament in Brooklyn, has tied the league record it set last season by placing nine teams in the 2018 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Virginia, who won the ACC Tournament on Saturday night in a win over North Carolina, is the Number One overall seed in the field.  Duke and North Carolina enter as Number Two seeds. North Carolina beat Duke in the semifinal of the conference tournament to earn that spot.

The Cavaliers, Blue Devils and Tar Heels are joined by Clemson, Florida State, Miami, NC State, Syracuse and Virginia Tech among the field of 68 teams unveiled early Sunday evening.

NYCFC & Red Bulls Win Home Openers

This weekend saw both the Red Bulls and New York City Football Club win their home openers.

The Red Bulls won 4-0 over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night at Red Bull Arena, while NYCFC won 2-1 over the LA Galaxy on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.

Red Bulls 4, Portland 0

The Red Bulls won at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night over Portland in what was their first game of the MLS season. Though the MLS started play last weekend, they were essentially given a bye week because of their participation in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Virginia Beats North Carolina To Win ACC Championship

The Virginia Cavaliers won the ACC Championship in a 71-63 victory over North Carolina on Saturday night at Barclays Center.

This is Virginia’s third ACC Championship, and second in the last five years under Head Coach Tony Bennett. They lost to UNC in the title game two years ago, so this was a measure of revenge.

Virginia, now 31-2 on the season. was the top seed in this tournament in addition to being the top-ranked team in the nation, and they are primed to be Number One overall in the NCAA Tournament.

ACC Semifinals: North Carolina Wins A Classic With Duke

North Carolina beat Duke in an utter classic, 74-69, in the ACC Semifinals on Friday night at Barclays Center.

North Carolina will take on Virginia in the ACC Championship Game Saturday night at 8:30 pm. This is the second time they are facing off in the title game in three seasons, which was won by North Carolina.

North Carolina was led by Luke Maye, who had a double-double with 17 points on 8-18 shooting, and 10 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end. He also had four assists.

Joel Berry II had 13 points (3-11 FG< 3-7 three-pointers), with six assists and five rebounds.

Cameron Johnson, Kenny Williams, and Garrison Brooks had 10 apiece, with Williams also racking up six assists and six rebounds.

The biggest stats for North Carolina were that they had 18 offensive rebounds and 24 assists.

ACC Semifinals: Virginia Gets By Clemson To Reach Final

The Virginia Cavaliers, the number one ranked team in the country and here in Brooklyn at the ACC Tournament, knocked off four-seeded Clemson 64-58 on Friday night in the semifinals.

The Cavaliers move on to the ACC Championship Game Saturday night against the winner of Duke and North Carolina. This is the ninth ACC final appearance for Virginia.

ACC Day 3: North Carolina Stuns Miami To Set Up Meeting With Duke

The North Carolina Tar Heels erased a 14-0 deficit by halftime on their way to an 82-65 victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

The win set up a meeting with archrival Duke in the semifinals for the second straight season. Tip-off will be Friday night at 9:30 pm.

ACC Day 3: Duke, Led By Bagley & Allen, Powers Past Notre Dame

Duke, led by big performances from Marvin Bagley III and Grayson Allen, pulled away in the second half and beat Notre Dame, 88-70 in the ACC Quarterfinals on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

Bagley led the way for Duke, with 33 points, 23 of which came in a second half in which he shot a near-perfect 11-12 from the field. He shot 15-23 overall on the night, including 2-3 on three pointers. He also did it on the boards, collecting 17 rebounds to earn a double-double.

Allen scored 23 points on the night, and 15 of them came in the first 10 minutes of the game. He shot a superb 7-10 on the night, including 5-6 from three-point range.
